Fohenagh v Claregalway, Sunday 24 May 1942

The 1941 junior county semi-final, Fohenagh against Claregalway, was played at Athenry on Sunday 24 May 1942, and the game was abandoned[1][3]. The Connacht Tribune of 23 May 1942, page 10, fixed the match for that Sunday at 4.30 p.m. and said the winners would meet Eyrecourt in the final[1].

The County Board met on Saturday 6 June 1942[2]. The Connacht Sentinel of 9 June 1942 reported the suspension, and the Connacht Tribune of 13 June 1942 recorded the twelve months: both teams were suspended for twelve months, and Eyrecourt were declared 1941 champions[2][3].

The Connacht Tribune of 13 June 1942 reported the meeting as Blackguardism at Athenry causes heat at County Board meeting[3]. The board sat in the Royal Hotel in Galway, and the discussion lasted over two hours[3]. Under the heading Serious Charges came allegations of illegal players, and the chairman said Fohenagh were not playing a legal team that day[3].

M. Silver of Ardrahan said that some teams had “powerful panzer divisions” behind them[3].
