Hurling, 1950s–1960s
Tony O'Gorman
Selected for Galway v Tipperary (National League, 30 Oct 1960)
Summary
The Connacht Tribune of 29 January 2021 prints "Anthony O'Gorman (captain)" in the front row of the Fohenagh side that "claimed back-to-back Galway senior hurling titles", the team Tony O'Gorman captained when they retained the Galway senior hurling title in 1960[1]. On 6 June 1961 he was the star of the full-back line as Fohenagh, the holders, beat Maree 5-6 to 1-5 at the Kenny Memorial Stadium, Athenry (Connacht Sentinel, 6 June 1961)[2]. The Tuam Herald of 3 September 1960 called Tony O'Gorman 'coolness personified', and wrote that "He proved a capable captain last Sunday in the wonderful way he marshalled his men"[3]. The Connacht Tribune of 28 January 1961 wrote of Tony O'Gorman, "who hurls with Fohenagh" (parish hurler)[4]. The Connacht Tribune of 27 May 1961 wrote of "Tony O'Gorman, Fohenagh, who starred in the Fitz gibbon Cup" (fitzgibbon games)[5]. The Connacht Tribune of 17 August 1984 remembered that Tony O'Gorman and the players of that era "wore the Fohenagh jersey with pride and distinction"[6].
