P.J. Lally

Oireachtas Cup winner with Galway, 1958

Summary

Won an Oireachtas Cup medal with Galway in 1958, beating Wexford in the final (A History of Fohenagh, Tony O'Gorman)[1]. He stands in the photo of the Galway team for the 1958 All-Ireland senior hurling final (Tuam Herald, 23 June 2021, p.52)[2]. By early 1959 he was a county hurler, and he and Tim Sweeney lined out in a football game (Connacht Tribune, 21 February 1959, p.12)[3]. The reports of Fohenagh's first senior title call him a tireless midfielder, and he was named on the side for the replay against Castlegar, Fohenagh 3-9, Castlegar 4-5 (Connacht Tribune, 19 September 1959)[3]. A History of Fohenagh names P. J. Lally in the 1959 and 1960 senior hurling champions photographs, and the Galway City Tribune of 29 January 2021 places him on the 1960 side that won the title again[4]. He was selected for Galway against Tipperary in the National League on 30 October 1960[4]. In 2024 the Fohenagh midfielder was inducted alongside his 1958 team-mates (Connacht Tribune, 22 November 2024, p.26)[4].
