Fohenagh's 1947 county camogie final
Fohenagh reached their first county camogie final in 1947, after wins over Tuam, Ballymacward, Ballinasloe Mental Hospital and Caltra. On 16 November 1947 they met Erin's Hope at UCG Park. Erin's Hope still had six county players and were the favourites. They led by two goals early on, and Fohenagh were two points behind at half-time. Brilliant play by Rita Clinton, and a goal by Pauline Hopkins midway through the second half, put Fohenagh a point ahead. They held that lead. The score was Fohenagh 3-1, Erin's Hope 3-0. The team was B. Clinton, L. Madden, M. Barrett, A. Madden, M. Madden (captain), P. Hopkins, R. Clinton, J. Glynn, A. Glynn, M. Farrell, M. Glynn and K. Naughton. The book gives the Connacht Tribune of 16 November 1947 as its source for the final.

Fohenagh v Gurteen, 1890: fifty minutes, no score
On 15 July 1890 Fohenagh, captained by Tim Glynn, played Gurteen at a big Gaelic tournament in a field lent by the Cormican family. After fifty minutes of 'spirited stopping and blocking' the teams were called off. The score? Nothing all! Around the same time Fohenagh beat Kilconnell 2 goals 1 point to 1 goal in a Caltra football tournament, and lost 1 goal 3 points to nil at Glentane.

The turf lorry and the Athenry Arch (1947)
How do you get a camogie crowd 35 miles to Galway in 1947? In Kevin Doherty's (Woodlawn) turf lorry, 'suitably insulated'. The trip home after the county final win is local folklore: the celebrations started early in Foster Street, the driver was in no state to drive, and John Joe Kirwan took the wheel. Then the lorry got wedged in Athenry's medieval Arch! After plenty of advice, the top tier of the creel was taken off, and the lorry and its relieved passengers got home with only one stop, in Menlough.

With fewer children around (96 on the school roll in 1988, 46 by 2000), Fohenagh joined Ahascragh at underage level in 1999, and won county U-14 B and Minor B titles straight away. On 21 January 2002 both clubs held their AGMs at the same time and amalgamated as Ahascragh-Fohenagh. For many who remembered the 1950s glory days, losing their 112-year-old club was sad, but there was no other way.
